Glamour Responds to Skinny Betty Charges!
By Manolo the ShoebloggerManolo says, many of the Manolo’s internet friends have taken it upon themselves to write the angry emails to the magazine Glamour, for the crime of photoshopping skinny the wonderfully zaftig America Ferrera.
Here is the letter and reply from one sharp-tongued reader, Cheryl
I sent the following email to Glamour:
Are you people complete idiots? America Ferrera is a beautiful woman and your obviously badly photoshopped cover picture is an insult. She does not have a giraffe’s neck nor plastic doll arms. She has a wonderful, curvaceous body with full breasts and hips. Real women have curves!!! What you have done is degrading.
Here’s their response:
Dear Cheryl,
Thanks so much for your letter about our October cover photo of America Ferrera. Let me assure you, we did not digitally slim her; as she mentions in the interview, she wears a size 6/8 on the bottom, ten on the top.
You are seeing her as she actually appears. That said, we deeply value your feedback. Be sure to take a look inside at the photos of America and let us know what you think.
Sincerely,
Margie Guerra
Reader Services
Internet friend Orbis confirms that this is the standard reply to the internet-based malcontents.
I got the exact same response as Cheryl, word for word… except, interestingly enough, mine came signed “Lynda Laux-Bachand, Reader Services Editor”, no mention of Marie Guerra. It’s clearly a stock reply, they must have gotten a few letters about it.
So, too, does the Jimmy Choo Choo Choo Me
I received the same stock e-mail from Glamour. I have never had my intelligence insulted like that in my entire life. It can’t be good business to treat people who comment on your magazine like morons.
Clearly the editors at Glamour have taken the Nixonian tact of stonewalling their critics. Go look at the picture again and judge for yourself if you are seeing America Ferrera “as she actually appears”.
P.S. There is also the very spirited discussion of this topic taking place at Manolo for the Big Girl.

In terms of Photoshop weight loss, it’s pretty good, right up there with the miracles performed on Martha Stewart almost every month.
I’m sure that cover has a very proud place in the designers portfolio.

Gotta disagree; if the ’shopper were any good, he’d have shrunk the man hands, not the arms. Leaving them this way makes her look like a Barbie doll wearing baseball mitts.

Except - she doesn’t have man hands. They only look that way in proportion to the freakily skinny arms in the photoshopped picture.

It is art. Check out the proportions. Her hair is bigger thus making her hips look slimmer. The angle of the shot. In the cover shot her hips are back and her arms are in front which also make her look slimmer from the waist down. Compare the shots. As for the response from Glamour, it sounded fine to me. I don’t know how many ways you would need it put. In regards to your intelligence being insulted, I hardly think that calling people idiots entitles one to much of an intelligent response anyway.

I don’t follow what was just posted.
